龍田の白いコートハウス
この住宅は、大和平野の北西、百人一首にも読まれた、龍田川の近くの住宅地に建つ。
敷地は、住宅地の中でも一番奥まった場所に位置し、ドンツキと呼ばれる行き止まりの道の先にある。
したがって敷地は、3ｍしか接道しておらず、四方が建物に囲われたような場所である。
3ｍの接道部分は駐車スペースとしなければならず、建物全体を道路側から認識することができないような配置となっている。
このため、建物は、コートハウス（建物や塀に囲まれた中庭を持つ住宅）と呼ばれるような形態の住宅として提案することとした。
平面的には田の字型の形状を基本とし、その一区画を壁で囲われた中庭にした。
壁で囲うことにより、中庭に向いた開口部にカーテンを設けない生活が実現できると共に中庭と室内とが連続する、開放感と光溢れる住空間を提案することができた。
玄関は白い外壁から木の箱が飛び出すようなイメージで設けている。
玄関を入ると、吹抜けに印象的なリビング階段が設けられたLDKにつながる。
LDKは中庭を囲む形で配置されており、さらに、吹抜けを中庭と対角に配置することで、一つの空間で自然光を浴びる空間、人工の光を浴びる空間、自然光と人工がまっじた空間など多様な光を感じられる住宅を提案することができたのではないかと思っている。
This house stands in a residential area near the Tatsuta River—celebrated in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu—on the northwestern edge of the Yamato Plain. The site lies at the very back of the neighborhood, at the end of a dead-end street. As a result, it has only three meters of frontage to the road and feels enclosed on all sides by neighboring buildings. That narrow frontage must serve as the parking space, so the building cannot be perceived in its entirety from the street.
Given these conditions, the project is proposed as a courtyard house, with a plan based on a four-square “ta-no-ji” (田の字) arrangement, one quadrant of which becomes a walled courtyard. Enclosing the courtyard with walls makes curtain-free living possible for the openings facing it, and creates a living environment where the courtyard and interior flow together, yielding a sense of openness and abundant light.
The entrance is expressed as a wooden box projecting from the white exterior wall. Stepping inside, one arrives at an open-plan living–dining–kitchen (LDK) area featuring an impressive living-room stair set within a double-height space. The LDK is arranged to wrap the courtyard, and by placing the double-height void diagonally opposite the courtyard, the single continuous space offers varied experiences of light: areas bathed in natural light, areas illuminated by artificial light, and areas where the two mingle. I believe this composition creates a home where the qualities of light can be richly felt.
